I have a prejudice against homeless people. When I see them, they make me feel uncomfortable, I assume that they let their life get out of control and therefore are paying the price for their own inattention to what it takes to get through life. I have a friend who was homeless for a short period of time; she has a Masters degree. So the prejudice that I have against homeless people--a negative feeling that they are all shifty, untrustworthy, uneducated and unskilled--is unfounded. But despite that, my behavior is partially determined by that prejudice I have.
Stereotypes are aggregated traits and characteristics that we tend to ascribe to ALL members of the same group. In my example above, my limited exposure to homeless people leads me to believe that what little I DO know is applicable to ALL homeless people. A lot of this is perpetuated by the media. How many times have you seen a TV show that depicts homeless people as thieves, scoundrels, dirty, uneducated, on-the-make, untrustworthy, shifty, dirty, mentally unstable, etc. etc. etc.? From those depictions we tend assume that ALL homeless people have those traits which is not true.
