1. [表示条件或假设]如果；假如，倘若，要是：

If I knew, I would say.

2. 尽管；虽然；即使：

If he is little, he is strong.

他尽管年纪小，力气倒蛮大的。

If I am wrong, you are not right.

即使我错了，你也不对。

3. 是否：

I don't know if he is at home.

问他是否在家。

Ask him if he's at home.

我不知道他是否在家。

4. 当…时，就：

If I do not understand, I ask questions.

当我不懂时我就问。

If I feel any doubt, I ask.

我有疑问时就问。

5. [表示愿望、感叹]要是…多好：

If I hadn't lost my purse!

我的钱包要是没丢多好!

6. [与 will， could 等连用，表示婉言请求]：

　一、引导宾语从句，一般既可用whether也可用if。但

　1 or not放在whether之后时，只能用whether不用if。

　I don?t know whether or not he will come. 我不知道他是不是回来。

　注1：如果or not放在whether所引导的从句句尾，则可以用if来替换。

　I don?t know whether/if he will come or not.我不知道他是不是回来。

　2 在强调任意选择时,用whether?or,此时不用if替换whether。

　He asked me whether I wanted to go there by train or by bus.他问我是想乘火车还是坐公共汽车去那里。

　注：whether和or一起还有?不管?之意,引导让步状语从句。

　Whether he drives or takes the train, he will be here on time.不管开车来还是乘火车来，他都会准时到。

　3 虽引导宾语从句，但为了强调宾语部分，也可把从句放在句首，此时只用whether不用if。

　Whether he will come I am not sure.他是不是来我拿不准。

　4 从句作介词宾语时只用whether不用if。

　It depends on whether it will be fine.那得看是不是晴天。

　5 作discuss等动词的宾语时，用whether不用if。

　We discussed whether we should close the shop.我们讨论是不是该关掉商店。

　6 句子中有if引导的条件句，如再有表示?是否?的宾语从句，用whether不用if。

　He asked me whether I?d move to New York if I got the job.他问我如果我得到那份工作是否会搬家到纽约。

　7 容易产生歧义时用whether不用if来表示?是否?。

　Please let me know if you need help. 如果你需要帮助请告诉我。或：请告诉我你是否需要帮助。对比：Please let me know if you need help.请告诉我你是否需要帮助。

　8 如果宾语从句为否定句时，则只用if不用whether。

　I don?t know if it won't rain tomorrow..我不知道明天是不是会下雨。

　二、在引导主语从句、表语从句、同位语从句时一般用whether不用if。如：

　⑴Whether it is true remains a question.(主语从句)那是不是真的还是个问题。

　⑵The question is whether it is true.(表语从句)问题是是不是真的。

　⑶We have a doubt whether it is true.(同位语从句) 我们怀疑那是不是真的。

　注:whether引导主语从句放在主句之后时可用if来代替。

　It is unclear whether/if he likes the present.他是不是喜欢那个礼物还不清楚。

　三、用在动词不定式之前时用whether不用if。

　I don?t know whether to go there at once. 我不知道是不是该立刻去那里。 (河北：李亚男)

　deer n. 鹿

　deer是可数名词，那么，deer的复数形式是什么?这是很多同学很容易搞错的问题。请记住，deer是单、复数同形的词，所以，deer的复数仍然是deer。如：one deer，two deer，这样的名词还有fish，sheep等。

　例句：

　In the zoo, there are many deer.?

　动物园里有很多鹿。

　The hunter wounded the deer.

　猎人打伤了鹿。

　unit 表示汉语的?单位?，主要有两种可能，一是指构成整体的?单位?或?单元?;二是指计数或计量的?单位?。如：

　The book is divided in to ten units. 这本书分成10个单元。

　The family is often taken as the unit of society. 家庭常被视为社会的基本单位。

　A gram is a unit of weight. 克是重量单位。

　The meter reads 5,500 units. 仪表标明为5,500单位。

　所以，我们平常说的?工作单位?，通常不宜用 unit 表示，可根据情况灵活表达。如 ：

　All my workmates are friendly to me. 我单位的同事对我都很好。

　Her friends from work came to see her in hospital. 她工作单位的朋友到医院来看望她。

　I live a long way from work, as you know. 我住得离工作单位很远，这你是知道的。

　若所说的单位指的是工作地点，则可考虑用 workplace。如：

　It takes me half an hour to go to my workplace by bus. 我到单位上班要坐1小时的公交车。

　当然，如果所说的?单位?指的是构成整体的部分，则可用unit来表示。如：

　I can see no justification for dividing the company into smaller units. 我认为没有理由把公司划分成小单位。

　Both units are largely dependent on the parent company. 两个单位均主要依靠母公司。

　附录：unit 的意义比较多，除以上提到的用法外，它还可表示：

　(1)(机构中的)科，室，部门。如：(www.hxen.com)

　She has been transferred to another unit. 她调到另外一个部门去了。

　(2)(团队或部队中的)小队，分队。如：

　It?s a unit of highly-trained soldiers. 那是经过高度训练的士兵小分队。

　(3)(一幢楼中的)一套房子，一单元。如：

　The building contains 50 housing units. 这座大楼有50套住房。

　(4)(机器中的)构件，部件，元件。如：

　the central processing unit in a computer 计算机的中央处理机

　(5)(家具的)组合件，一套中的一件。如：

　I want to buy some kitchen units. 我想买些厨房设备。
