“and”是普通连词

“not only … （but） also …”是一个并列连词词组,其意思基本等于“both … and …”,但侧重点放在“but also”上,另外该词组使用时须遵守一定的规则,如要求对称,倒装及主谓一致等.

这两个词意思相同,常常可以通用,例如：

He knew it was impossible to accomplish it by individual effort only〔alone〕.他知道只靠个人努力是不能完成那件工作的。

它们之间的区别是：

1.在句中的位置不同：alone通常要放在它所修饰的词语之后,而only却可置于其前。例如：

只有他才能做这件事。

He alone can do it.

Only he can do it.

2.含义上也有区别：alone表示只此一个,别无其他,相当于exclusively; 而only则暗示所指的事物有所限制,相当于solely。例如：

Our farm alone sold 80,000 kilograms of wheat.

单是我们农场就出售了八万公斤小麦。

Only our farm sold 80,000 kilograms of wheat.

只有我们农场出售了八万公斤小麦。

第一句暗指其他农场也出售了这么多甚至更多; 而第二句则暗指其他农场没有我们多。再如：

They alone sell cotton clothing.

他们独家出售棉布服装。

They only sell cotton clothing.

他们只售棉布服装。(不售丝绸)
