only与mere的用法区别

mere是形容词

1）仅仅，只不过；

A mere 2 miles isn't too far to walk.

仅仅两英里，不是远得不能步行去。

2）纯粹的

Your meeting us was a mere accident.

你遇到我们纯属偶然。

merely是副词：仅仅，只不过；

This is merely the beginning.

这仅仅是个开始。

His explanations were merely poor excuse.

他的解释只不过是一个蹩脚的借口。

另：not merely……but ……不仅……而且……与not only……but also的意思相同，用法也相同。

He is not merely learned, but wise.

他不仅仅有学问还有大智慧。

only是形容词、副词、连词。

1）副词：仅仅，只

They have only one bicycle.

他们只有一辆自行车。

2）形容词：唯一的，仅有的

You are the only person here who can speak English.

你是这里唯一能说英语的人。

3）连词：但是，只不过

The book is likely to be useful, only it's rather expensive.

这本书可能很有用，只是相当贵。

所以它们虽然意思都是相同的，但是由于词性上的区别，所以在我们运用时就需要有选择了。一般only是最经常用的，但是就象写作文的时候如果能变化的用上mere或者merely，相信印象分就会相对的高些了。

要辨析异同，最好看看基本用法，特别是英语解释。

从以上基本用法可知：

only 词性最多，意义最丰富。当它作副词时，可以和merely通用；但作其它词性时，则不能通用。

nothing but:作副词时，经常连在一起使用，这是一般也可以与其他两个互换；但是，当做连词用时，它还可以分开来使用，两次中间需要加其他词 ，此时不能与另外两词互换。例如：

We have nothing here but some potatoes.我们在这里只有土豆（可吃或提供）。
