据楚大夫庄幸说，当年鄂君子皙“泛舟于新波”之中，有个越人“拥楫而歌”。歌词表达了越人对身为令尹的楚王母弟鄂君子皙的仰慕之情。但鄂君子皙不懂越语，不得不请人翻译。于是汉语文学史上有了这首著名的《越人歌》。据说这是中国文学史上翻译的第一首民歌。英文翻译，基本上是以句为单位的直译，没有发生明显的改变和修饰。

这大约也是一首古歌，流传于江苏阜宁一带。庄稼人在耕田或赶车时，一边吆喝一边唱着：“你劳苦，我也劳苦。我吃粮食，你吃草。”全诗实际上只用了七个字。翻译用了专指中国古代劳工的coolie（苦力），而后两句做了位置的调换，更加符合逻辑。

这首儿歌，其节奏是二二二，但两句一段，押韵，叠字、叠词，有韵味。翻译是一种半模仿、半创造的事业，只求大体有韵味、有节奏，基本上有意思而已。
